In the relentless quest to democratize data – because apparently, everyone needs to be a data analyst now – emerged Metabase. It promised a beautifully simple interface, allowing even the most spreadsheet-averse among us to query databases and build dashboards without writing a single line of SQL. The pitch was compelling: business intelligence for the rest of us.

The reality, as often happens, is a touch more nuanced. While it does deliver on ease of use – and the question builder is genuinely clever – complex analyses quickly require SQL knowledge anyway. Think Tableau Lite meets a slightly opinionated SQL runner. It fills a niche for smaller teams needing basic reporting, but struggles with the scale and sophistication of dedicated BI platforms. You’ll find it happily chugging away in startups and smaller organizations, a perfectly serviceable tool for those who’ve decided Power BI is just… too much.
