Back in the primordial soup of the early web, before JavaScript promised to solve all our problems, there was a simple need: structure. HTML, or HyperText Markup Language, emerged as the surprisingly elegant solution—a way to tell browsers what things were, not just how they looked. It wasn’t about fancy design, it was about declaring, “This is a heading,” or “This is a paragraph.” Revolutionary, really.

Of course, the reality is a bit messier. What began as semantic clarity devolved into a tangled web of presentational tags, divs for everything, and a constant battle against browser inconsistencies. Compared to its rivals – the fleeting SGML and the even more obscure ones – HTML won by being… well, less awful. Today, it’s the bedrock of the web, still chugging along despite the relentless parade of frameworks promising to replace it. Everyone uses it, even those pretending they don’t, though few bother with the semantic purity it once championed. A foundational technology, undeniably, and a constant reminder that simplicity is often the hardest thing to achieve.
