SQL - the cockroach of database languages that simply refuses to die, and thank heavens for that. Born in IBM's labs in the 1970s, this venerable query language has survived more "SQL killers" than one can count on both hands, from NoSQL to graph databases to whatever newfangled abstraction Silicon Valley has dreamed up this week.
Despite being older than most developers wielding it, SQL remains the lingua franca of data manipulation, powering everything from legacy systems to modern cloud warehouses like Snowflake and BigQuery. While the cool kids play with their Spark notebooks and MongoDB clusters, SQL quietly gets on with the job of, well, actually querying data. Its declarative nature and standardization (mostly - looking at you, MySQL) make it surprisingly relevant for modern data tasks. Yes, it has its quirks - try explaining window functions to a junior analyst - but SQL's staying power is nothing short of remarkable in an industry obsessed with the next big thing.
