Back in the late 90s, when the web was still figuring itself out, someone decided relational databases weren’t quite accessible enough. Thus, MySQL emerged – a scrappy, open-source contender promising database power to the masses. It claimed to be the easy button for web applications, a nimble alternative to the lumbering giants of Oracle and IBM. In reality, it quickly became the workhorse for countless websites, often running on underpowered servers and fueled by questionable configurations.

These days, MySQL—now under Oracle’s umbrella, naturally—still powers a significant chunk of the internet. It's the dependable, if slightly frayed, foundation for many PHP-based applications and content management systems. While PostgreSQL has gained traction among developers demanding more features and stricter adherence to standards, MySQL remains stubbornly popular, largely due to its legacy and the sheer inertia of existing deployments. Quite clever, really, though one does wonder if its continued success is down to technical merit or simply being first to market.
