In a world drowning in data and increasingly wary of sending everything to American tech giants, emerged Matomo. Originally Piwik, it promised the holy grail of web analytics: complete ownership and control. The pitch? Self-hosted, open-source tracking that lets you avoid the privacy concerns and data silos of Google Analytics. Quite clever, really, though one does wonder if everyone actually wants to be their own data center operator.
The reality, of course, is a bit more involved. While technically capable, Matomo demands actual server administration – a skill set surprisingly rare these days. It’s a powerful tool for those willing to invest the time, but often ends up as a neglected server collecting dust. Compared to the effortless integration of Google Analytics, it’s a steeper climb. Still, it’s gained traction amongst privacy-conscious organizations and those in heavily regulated industries, proving that some truly do prefer owning the plumbing, even if it occasionally leaks.
