Back in the dark ages of software delivery – roughly 2006 – when committing code didn't automatically deploy it to the cloud, a need arose for automated build and testing. Jenkins, initially Hudson, gallantly stepped forward, promising continuous integration nirvana. It claimed to liberate developers from the tyranny of manual builds, a noble goal indeed.

The reality, of course, involves a bewildering web of plugins, a configuration-as-code experience that frequently feels like deciphering ancient runes, and a server that perpetually threatens to consume all available memory. While alternatives like GitLab CI and CircleCI offer slicker, cloud-native experiences, Jenkins remains stubbornly popular, particularly in enterprises already steeped in its particular brand of complexity. It’s the duct tape of the DevOps world – not elegant, but surprisingly effective when wielded by someone who truly understands its quirks.
