The reality, naturally, is a touch more nuanced. It does largely deliver on the promise, though ‘plug and play’ often translates to ‘configure and pray’ when dealing with complex source systems.
While alternatives like Airbyte offer open-source flexibility, Fivetran's managed service appeals to those willing to trade control for convenience—and a hefty subscription fee. Today, it’s become a mainstay for data teams prioritizing speed and scale, particularly in marketing and SaaS companies, though the rising cost is causing some to re-evaluate if the convenience truly outweighs the cost. It's merger with dbt means the 'modern' data stack might soon become legacy itself.
