Back in the primordial soup of data exchange, before everyone decided JSON was the answer to all life’s problems, there was a desperate need for simple, human-readable data storage. Thus, the comma-separated value file was born – a beautifully naive attempt to wrangle information into something even a spreadsheet program could understand. It promised portability, simplicity, and a world free from binary file formats.
The reality, of course, is a bit messier. Encoding issues, quoting nightmares, and the constant debate over whether a comma within a field is a feature or a bug plague us still. While XML and JSON offer structure and validation, {{short_name}} remains stubbornly popular – largely because everyone already has a text editor and a spreadsheet program. It's the digital equivalent of duct tape: not elegant, but surprisingly effective when you just need to get the job done, and still surprisingly ubiquitous in data exports and simple data transfers.
