Azure Data Factory (ADF): Microsoft’s cloud ETL service, launched in 2015, was designed to help enterprises wrangle data. It competes with AWS Glue, Google Cloud Dataflow, and traditional tools like Informatica. ADF’s selling point? Seamless integration with the whole Azure ecosystem—naturally. If you're all-in on Azure, it’s a no-brainer. Otherwise, you'll feel the lock-in creeping.
With ADF, you're promised a low-code experience, so you too can play data engineer. But don’t get too comfy, because complex workflows still require that lovely mix of handholding and custom coding. Its key differentiators: native integration with Azure services, hybrid data movement across on-prem and cloud, and a visual interface that’s actually not terrible.
Still, ADF's pay-as-you-go model means you can kiss transparency goodbye when the bill comes in. Watch your usage or prepare for some interesting conversations with your finance department.
