The rather fashionable lovechild of data engineering and analysis that's been making waves since dbt Labs (formerly Fishtown Analytics) popularized it around 2016. Think traditional BI analyst meets software engineering practices, but with better documentation and fewer existential crises about data quality.
These chaps essentially bridge the gap between raw data and business insights, wielding modern data stack tools like dbt, Snowflake, and BigQuery with remarkable panache. Rather unlike their data engineering predecessors, who'd spend weeks building complex ETL pipelines, analytics engineers focus on transformation, testing, and documentation - all while maintaining a peculiarly obsessive relationship with version control. The role has gained tremendous traction, particularly among tech-savvy startups who'd rather not maintain separate teams for data engineering and analysis. Quite clever, really, though one does wonder if it's not just another Silicon Valley rebrand of existing practices.
