In the relentless pursuit of understanding user behavior, along came PostHog. Born from the frustration of expensive, black-box analytics platforms, it promised to be the open-source, self-hosted panacea for product teams craving granular insight. The pitch? Combine product analytics, session recording, feature flags, and A/B testing into a single, beautifully integrated platform. Quite clever, really, though one does wonder if consolidating everything into one tool doesn’t simply create a different kind of complexity.

The reality is a solid, if somewhat demanding, platform. It does deliver on the promise of unified data, but requires a willingness to self-host or embrace the hosted offering – and a team comfortable with a bit of technical configuration. Compared to the giants like Amplitude or Mixpanel, PostHog offers significantly more control and cost savings, but at the expense of out-of-the-box simplicity. Increasingly popular with startups and developer-focused companies, it’s carving a niche for those who prefer to own their data…and aren't afraid to tinker.
